Are Dogs Allowed On Rental Boats?

Unless you are the owner of the boat, it is important to ask if a boat rental company is dog friendly.

With pet-related activities becoming increasingly more popular, many boat rentals and private charters will accommodate pets, but not all of them.

Dog-friendly boating companies usually have some rules and restrictions i.e. weight limit restrictions, dedicated watercraft rentals for dogs, ensuring dogs are well mannered and always on a leash, and providing your own life vest, to name a few.

It is important to call and check with the company on their pet policies prior to your visit.

Are service dogs allowed on boat rentals?

Laws vary by state so it is important to check your regional policies regarding service animals.

For example, in Florida, an individual with a disability is entitled to full and equal accommodations, advantages, facilities, and privileges in all public accommodations.

A public accommodation must modify its policies, practices, and procedures to permit use of a service animal by an individual with a disability.

Is It Safe To Bring My Dog On A Boat Rental?

It is absolutely safe to bring your dog on a boat! However, there are a few things to know when taking your dog on a boat for the first time.

Thousands of people all over the world take their dogs on the boat to enjoy time on the water. That being said, be sure to monitor your dog so you both have a safe and fun time.

What To Pack For Dog?

  • Doggie Lifejacket- prepare for the worst, hope for the best. Ensure you get your dog an adequate flotation device in case he goes overboard. Look for ones with handles that will make retrieving your pet safer and easier.
  • Sunscreen- dogs need UV protection too! Make sure those footsies, noses, and paws are protected this summer.
  • Water- dogs don’t sweat like us! Make sure they stay hydrated.
  • Potty Pads- Your dog will need to relieve himself at some point – bring potty pads or create an astroturf potty spot for the hull of the boat for your dog to do his duty.
  • Cooling device- make sure your dog gets some time out of the sun -whether you use a cooling mat, an umbrella, or a towel make sure your pup gets some much-needed shade.

Am I Liable If My Dog Damages Anything?

Typically as with any rental, the renter agrees to pay for any and all damages incurred during the time of said agreement.

Similarly, ANY damage due to the dog during the time of rental will be the responsibility of the renter to pay for.

How to find pet-friendly boat rentals

There are some awesome websites like bringfido.com that help you find the best pet-friendly travel, attractions, activities, lodging, boat rentals, and more.

However, the best course of action when trying to find a pet-friendly rental is to call the boat company directly.

Be sure to ask about their policies regarding service animals, weight limits, and liabilities. The last thing you want to do is show up for your boat rental with your pup, and get denied access.

Oftentimes, with private boat rental companies, you can speak with the owner or manager directly, and explain the circumstances.

If your dog is mild-mannered and loves the water, tell them! Show them a picture, and explain how this is a family event (dogs included!).

The best type of boats to rent for dogs

In our opinion, a pontoon boat is a great choice for first-time fluffy riders. Pontoon boats have a flat deck set up making them more stable for your four-legged friends.

Pontoon boats are super spacious making for a comfortable ride for everyone. Pontoons typically come equipped with exterior rails, giving your pooch the luxury to safely look out and enjoy the views.

Since pontoons are typically slow boats made for leisurely activities they are the perfect rental boat for dogs who might be timid around the water.
